Measurement

What is VO2max?

VO2max is the highest rate at which your body can take up and use oxygen during hard exercise, usually given in millilitres per kilogram of body mass per minute (ml/kg/min). It is measured from the oxygen and carbon dioxide in your breath during a test that gets steadily harder. How it is calculated.

What is the difference between VO2max and VO2peak?

VO2max is reported when oxygen uptake clearly levels off near the end of a test. If the test ends before that plateau, the highest value reached is called VO2peak. VenTracer reports which one you reached.

Is it accurate?

We don't know yet, and we won't guess. VenTracer will be tested against a laboratory metabolic cart, and we'll publish the results before quoting any accuracy figure.

Does the gas sensor alone give VO2max?

No. VO2 needs both the gas concentrations and the volume of air you breathe. VenTracer pairs its dual-gas breath core with a breath flow sensor in the tube.

How is this different from my watch's VO2max?

Your watch estimates VO2max from heart rate, pace and a model of people like you. VenTracer measures the oxygen and carbon dioxide in your breath, along with how much air you move, and calculates VO2 directly.

Does it work at altitude?

It is designed to. The analyzer corrects for air pressure, temperature and humidity on every breath. Altitude performance will be part of validation.

Can VenTracer replace a lab metabolic cart?

Not until we have shown that it agrees with one. VenTracer will be tested side by side with laboratory reference systems, and the results published before we make any accuracy claim. Read the validation plan.

Does it measure lactate?

No. VenTracer measures breath: airflow, oxygen and carbon dioxide. Its thresholds are ventilatory thresholds (VT1 and VT2), found from gas exchange, not from blood lactate. How the thresholds are found.

Do I need to calibrate it?

Each test will start with a room-air reference and a seal check in the app. Any further calibration steps will be defined during prototype testing.PRELIM

Using it

Can I run and ride in it?

That's the point. The analyzer sits on the mask with no hoses or backpack, held by a five-point harness designed for a gas-tight fit at full effort.

How long is a test?

A typical ramp test to find VO2max and both thresholds takes about 8 to 12 minutes of hard work after a warm-up. Exact protocols will ship with the app.

Is it hard to breathe through?

The flow tube is open and designed for low resistance, and comes in sizes for rest and maximal effort. Resistance and mask dead-space figures will be published with the specifications.

Will it work with Strava, Garmin or Zwift?

Integrations haven't been announced. Pilot units export raw breath-by-breath data, and app and platform connections will be decided with pilot partners.

Which sports can I test in?

Anything where you can wear a mask: cycling, running, rowing, skiing, team sports and clinic treadmill or bike tests. Swimming is not supported.

Safety and data

Is VenTracer a medical device?

No. It's a fitness and performance tool. It isn't intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease, or to replace clinical cardiopulmonary exercise testing.

Who controls my data?

You control it. Raw breath-by-breath data will be exportable, so your coach or lab can analyse it in their own tools.

Is maximal testing safe?

For most healthy people, yes, but it is hard work. Talk to a doctor first if you have a heart, lung or other medical condition, or are unsure whether hard exercise is safe for you.

Where is my data stored?

Breath data is computed on the mask and sent to the app on your phone. Details of any cloud storage will be in the privacy notice before units ship. See the current privacy notice.

Availability

When can I get one?

Engineering prototypes are planned for 2027, followed by validation and pilot units for coaches, labs and clinics. Pricing hasn't been announced.

How much will it cost?

Pricing hasn't been announced.

Where will it be sold?

Pilot units come first. Wider availability will follow validation, and regions will be announced then.

How do I stay updated?

Join the waitlist, or apply as a pilot partner if you run a lab or clinic.
